Student References
As firm believer in the importance and power of youth voices, here are some voices of former students about my work with them in the classroom and beyond. (All of these were provided after the student finished in my courses, in the spring of 2020.)
"Your dedication and engagement with what you teach—both in class and with DA [Diversity Alliance - club] and JEDI [Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion - enrichment] — is what makes it so engaging and enjoyable to learn from and with you; in essence, your passion for teaching and spreading your knowledge is what inspires me to do the same. You’ve taught me that seizing the opportunity to educate myself is simply the first step in fostering change: I should then actively work to spread that new knowledge I’ve gained to those around me, and you’ve shown me how to do exactly that. I think what I love most about being in your classes and extracurricular activities, though, is that it always feels like an open channel of communication and learning; there’s this recognition that we can all learn from each other. You are so open to hearing us share what we know and then have this ability to integrate your knowledge with ours in a way that is particularly meaningful for me as a student who often actually finds it difficult to share out. I’ve never been afraid to contribute my perspective or thoughts in your classes and activities because you make every contribution feel valuable and important, and I am so grateful for the fact that you’ve created such an environment when you teach."
-Vrinda Vyas, WIHI Class of 2020
"Mrs. H-Y is among my favorite teachers to learn from inside and out of the classroom. She has a big heart that constantly drives her to ‘do good’. Plus, it is pristinely clear that the enormous amount of good she does, is not about looking good. But rather, it stems from a deeply rooted care for the wellbeing of the people and places around her. As teenagers, students are regularly challenged with choosing between being ‘cool’ and doing good. Or alternatively being ‘cool’ and having fun. (Truthfully the challenge continues well into adulthood as far as I can tell). Mrs. H-Y is an amazing role model for these students; She embodies the courage and principles necessary to choose the options everyone secretly wants to choose for themselves. The options that make the world more authentic. In that way, even without actively seeking it, Mrs. H-Y is one of the coolest people I know."
-Serena Varner, WIHI Class of 2018
"During my time at WIHI I was taught by, coached field hockey with, and participated in Diversity Alliance alongside Ms. Hunscher-Young. When I reflect on how I experienced activities led by Ms. Hunscher-Young, only positive memories come to mind. To me, a teacher needs to be, if nothing else, their student’s advocate; not only on an academic level but also in the broader sense. This is something I am glad to say Ms. Hunscher-Young was for me. She challenged me on countless occasions to become a better listener, activist, and member of my community. I believe Ms. Hunscher-Young is able to inspire her students to become better individuals by acting as a role model - someone who always gives 110%, takes time to reflect, and shares her passions (also asking others to do the same). In addition to advocating for her students, Ms. Hunscher-Young also teaches her students how to advocate for others. She provided me and my DA peers with opportunity after opportunity to be a part of community events (focused on a range of subjects rooted in social justice), some of which we organized ourselves. Her incredible organization and communication skills allowed Ms. Hunscher-Young to give us leadership roles. In doing so, Ms. Hunscher-Young creates a relationship of mutual respect; she trusts her students with various responsibilities, and so they feel more confident in completing assigned tasks. For all these reasons and more I am grateful to have had Ms. Hunscher-Young as a mentor. The skills (i.e. expressing my opinion, project managing, empowering others, etc.) I learned under guidance of Ms. Hunscher-Young have made me a better citizen. Thus, what makes Ms. Hunscher-Young an irreplaceable member of the WIHI community is her ability to teach beyond the classroom.”
-Eva Jansen, WIHI Class of 2018
"Ms. H-Y empowers students, and as one of the students she has empowered I can say with confidence that her support and encouragement has truly changed my life and perspective for the better. As an underclassmxn I knew that my identity impacted how I viewed the world and how the world viewed me, but I didn’t have the language or the knowledge to articulate my thoughts or to take positive action to make change in my community. As an advisor of Diversity Alliance, Ms. H-Y has provided students, including myself, opportunities that they didn’t know existed, created enrichments to extend on their learning, and overall created an environment where they can learn more about the world around them in a safe space. Because of the support from Ms. H-Y and her constant advocating for underrepresented voices while attending to privilege, I am more socially conscious, considerate, and think more about the perspectives of others in my day to day interactions, and in interactions beyond my immediate community. As a teacher she has worked so hard to decolonize the curriculum that remains complacently unrepresentative in our education system, and as a student I have learned more about the silenced voices in history that impact our world today because of her efforts. Ms. H-Y makes sure everyone is included, no matter the age, grade, or identity, she treats everyone with respect and understanding. She is a stellar ally and change agent, she is so humble, she allows students to be themselves unapologetically, and hearing her passion for making change by empowering students showed me her true drive for wanting to make our world a more socially just place, starting with our school community. Because of Ms. H-Y if I ever doubt myself, overextend myself, feel powerless or any emotion that comes with being a human, I hear her voice of encouragement, her kind thoughts, and her reminders that no matter who you are, you can be the change that you want to see in the world. As I move on from WIHI I am going to miss the environment she has created and the presence that she currently has in my life, however most of what I know and how I think about social justice, history, and representation has grown from the support from Ms. H-Y, and this impact will forever stay with me, especially as I share my thoughts in communities outside of my own. She inspires me to work harder, to use my resources to push for the world I want to see, and to maintain hope for a better tomorrow...and for that I am truly grateful."

"References are available upon request. Please fill out the contact form to get in touch with me about my references. Below are some brief references from colleagues.
"Joslyn has been an exceptional partner in developing the IB Psychology curriculum; she is innovative and committed to delivering engaging lessons for all students. Through her diligent planning, Joslyn is able to incorporate a variety of resources with clarity and accessibility for students through her organized notes system, detailed slides, and relevant content. By incorporating intentional wellness breaks in class and advocating for student assessment calendar balance, Joslyn inspires me to keep developing as an equitable educator.”
- Alison Rieth, Psychology & Literature Teacher
"When I think of Joslyn's impact on this school community, I am often reminded of a specific Audre Lorde poem. A passage of which reads as follows -
and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid
So it is better to speak
Joslyn often is the voice that speaks for our community when we, collectively, are afraid. She does the work that inches us toward best supporting our most vulnerable students. For me, personally, Joslyn has embodied the kind of leadership that makes clear how vision and force are not anathema to empathy and care."
- James Elish, Social Studies Teacher
"Joslyn consistently works to challenge our school to be more open-minded and caring. She has been supportive in helping me articulate when I see inequity within our school and is consistently thoughtful and calm in the face of inequity. After helping Joslyn plan one EDJI day last year, which totaled about 8 hours of work over Spring Break (just for my part in it!) in addition to having students help plan and lead, I can also advocate for the amount of work she puts into each and every EDJI day in our school. She is an incredible asset and I am so thankful to work with her to empower students to be changemakers."
- Kyrsten Persells, Literature Teacher
"As we have a common prep, I often come to Joslyn to ask her opinion about classroom decisions. She is always willing to discuss ideas and offer another perspective, which is incredibly helpful. Joslyn also advocates to make sure that the middle school perspective is heard in leadership meetings. Additionally, she has not only been a leader in DEI work, but has helped colleagues (including myself) with content preparation. Discussing DEI work with Joslyn challenges me to continue to educate myself and to become a more active advocate for change. Joslyn and I have also collaborated on, and have taught, an interdisciplinary unit for the past two years. She and I continue to work together to develop a unit that encourages students to advocate for change in fighting the climate crisis. Joslyn has been instrumental in helping to frame the content of the climate crisis unit as a social justice issue. Finally, I have really appreciated having her perspective in discussions surrounding salary transparency in our school. She has promoted moving toward a more fair system for all of us, and has offered all of us advice on preparing for our evaluation meetings, which has certainly encouraged me to prepare more fully for my own meeting."
