Student Work
In my time student teaching, I worked with both juniors and freshmen in high school, and here I have included a variety of examples of their work. This section highlights a couple of group projects for Global Studies, some creative responses in U.S. History, a test sample from Global Studies, and various essay examples from both classes. Although the levels in my class varied, the work presented here is all high quality. They all received good grades on the assignments, even though some of the students struggled in the class overall.
Global Studies - Group Work
Ancient China Timeline
To cover the basic information about the dynasties in ancient China, students were assigned to groups and had to read about a specific dynasty and complete an assignment sheet about their dynasty. Then, as group, they had to present key ideas about their dynasty to the class and place a written explanation of those ideas on the class timeline. The completed timeline is pictured below.

Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East
Similarly to the timeline, students were placed in groups and had to read information from their book about an ancient civilization in the Middle East. They completed a section of a graphic organizer and then filled that information out on the class-size graphic organizer as they presented it to the class. The completed class-size organizer is pictured below.

U.S. History - The Struggle of the Civil Rights Movement
View the Assignment
This assignment was to help students learn about the struggle of the Civil Rights movement. It was during the state testing period, so class was a bit short, and the students were also in the process of working on an essay about the Civil Rights, so this was the main instructional activity of the day.
This activity started by showing the students several images. They were instructed to write down the first word or phrase that came to mind and remain silent while looking at the images. The lecture then began with more detailed information about some events of the Civil Rights movement. At the end, students were asked to return to the words they wrote at the beginning and combine them into something that illustrated or shared their reaction to the struggle of the Civil Rights movement. You can view the lesson and the lecture guide in the first section below, and the PowerPoint is in the second section. |

Included here are four examples of student work for this assignment. These are all examples of good and different work. The first presents the students feeling in images, the second is through a simple written reaction, and the third and fourth are poems.

Global Studies - Ancient China Test
This was the first test I gave to my Global Studies class. After we had spent about three weeks studying ancient China, we reviewed for this exam. Students were given a review packet several days before the test, and we also spent some time in class reviewing. This example is from a student who moved up to the Accelerated level after several weeks because this course was too easy for him.
